Elementary school is a very important time in a child’s life since it’s the first time children are learning to be students in a formal educational environment. They begin to develop relationships and understand how to collaborate and resolve conflicts. The John Thomas Dye program fosters this discovery process by providing a well-rounded curriculum that offers a variety of engaging educational experiences for every child.

The Lower School program at JTD is designed to be the perfect balance between developing a child as a student and developing the child as a community member. We believe school should be a place where students grow both academically and socially. Our classrooms offer a safe space for children to explore the fundamentals of language arts, mathematics, and social studies while also being exposed to the arts, physical education, science, and technology.

Nothing speaks more to what a school should be than what is heard within the four walls of a classroom. Our academically rigorous learning environment is nestled in a balanced curriculum that teaches children to persevere through problem solving and encourages them to try new things. Our teachers facilitate this process by developing activities that stretch a child’s thinking, foster conversations between students as they work together to solve a problem, and nurture creativity in order to maximize the potential of every student.

While a strong academic experience is crucial to overall student success, elementary school is also the time for children to learn how to become compassionate, respectful, and responsible humans. The character education program at The John Thomas Dye School is centered around the “5C’s”: caring, common sense, consideration, cooperation, and courtesy. Through intentional lessons and school-wide assemblies, the tenets of the 5C’s are taught and reinforced regularly. JTD’s daily morning assemblies, as well as grade level projects and performances, buddy programs, and service learning activities foster a shared commitment to community and the 5C’s.

As a former lower school teacher and elementary school principal, I am committed to developing both the academic and personal growth of every child on campus. I hope you find time to come and learn more about our beautiful educational community.

Warm Regards,
