Transfer Admissions Process

Transfer Application Process

List of 6 items.

  • Inquire

The first step to the application process is to complete an inquiry form.

Please note: Openings at each grade level are based on attrition and depend on the number of projected openings we may have in any given year, which are often limited. We are unable to guarantee an opening in any grade level.
  • Apply

Applications will become available through the admissions portal on August 12, 2025 and the first date to submit an application for Grades 1-6 is September 30, 2025. JTD’s priority application date for Transfer Students is December 5, 2025. Families interested in applying after this date will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Tour and Interview

Once the application is processed, families will be invited to schedule their combined interview and campus tour.

For Lower School applicants (Grades 1-3), parents/guardians interview and tour with a member of the Admissions team. This visit is for parents/guardians only. Students will visit campus during their group assessment date later in January. Please see the Transfer Assessment section below for more information.

For Upper School applicants (Grades 4-6), students join their parents/guardians for the campus visit. Parents/guardians will meet with a member of the Admissions team while the student interviews with a faculty member and completes a writing sample. Together, students and their parents/guardians will tour the campus.

Families located outside of Southern California or for those applying for multiple children at different grade levels should contact the Admissions Office for accommodations.
  • Supplemental Materials

The due date for supplemental forms is January 9, 2026.

For Lower School applicants (Grades 1-3), we require academic transcripts (current and previous school years) and the LAIS teacher recommendation form. Please note, the teacher recommendation form must be completed by the child’s current homeroom teacher.

For Upper School applicants (Grades 4-6), we require academic transcripts (current and previous school years), the LAIS teacher recommendation form, and recent standardized test scores. Please note, the teacher recommendation form must be completed by the child’s current teacher (homeroom or core subject).
  • Student Assessment

Lower School applicants (Grades 1-3) will attend a group student assessment on campus. This assessment considers a student’s socioemotional development and academic ability to determine their readiness for our program.

Upper School applicants (Grades 4-6) will complete a short writing sample during their student interview. Recent standardized test scores will also be required. We accept ISEE standardized testing, public school state/district testing, or previous school testing such as the CTP5 or NWEA Map test. Please use the John Thomas Dye School’s code of 054003 to take the ISEE. If applicants do not have testing and would prefer to take a standardized exam through JTD, please contact the Admissions Office.
  • Events

We host a number of events throughout the winter for applicant families, including virtual Open Houses and Curriculum Chats. More information will be shared later in the process.

Enrollment Opportunities: Grades 1–6

Openings for Transfer Students vary from year to year and are based on attrition. When families apply to Grades 1–6, we often do not yet know if there will be an opening in the applicant’s grade level. On average, we typically have between 1–4 openings for Transfer Students in total, across all grades.

Each year, we meet many wonderful students and families interested in joining JTD and simply do not have space available to offer them a spot. Families are strongly encouraged to apply to other schools as we cannot guarantee that there will be an opening for every child who applies to the School.
