Teaching and Learning

Message from the Director of Teaching and Learning

Students learn best when learning within an atmosphere that stresses the right of each individual to be different and unique while developing confidence, mutual respect, and a degree of cooperation, allowing each student to strive for higher academic achievement, to develop an understanding of the rights of others, and to grow in self-esteem. Our goal at JTD is to have each student grow socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically, thus enabling each child to be a creative, productive, and responsible contributor to society.

Our Mission states that we encourage students to reach their highest individual potential intellectually, artistically and physically; nurture their emotional, moral and social development; and prepare them to meet the challenges of a diverse and competitive world. In order to achieve this, we fundamentally believe in providing a learning experience that is developmentally appropriate, relevant to the world we live in, and based on best instructional practices and educational research.

Social-emotional learning is an area that the School is consistently developing as research about how children learn and advances in neuroscience have become available. The School believes that by nurturing children's social, emotional and moral development, it prepares them for the challenges of living in a world of the future. For more than 30 years, John Thomas Dye has considered character education as core to the student learning experience. Embraced by teachers, parents and students, the experience has centered on the development of interpersonal skills and character development. The 5C’s: Caring, Common Sense, Consideration, Cooperation, and Courtesy, are integral to the overall student experience and character education component of our curriculum.

The learning journey that our students progress through has been designed to provide an intentional, developmentally appropriate social emotional program, a culturally responsive curriculum, within a technology rich learning environment, all in addition to a robust academic program. We believe that the combination of these key components will lead to developing students who love learning and are equipped to be successful in the next stage of their learning journey.
Warm Regards,
Hayley Roberts
