Message from the Director of Teaching and Learning

The academic program at JTD is underpinned by our mission. Each day, we strive to provide our students with opportunities and experiences that inspire purposeful learning, cultivate character, and celebrate childhood.

Learning should be purposeful, intentional, engaging, and empowering. At JTD, our teachers design learning opportunities that nurture and spark the natural curiosity of their students. We fundamentally believe in providing a learning experience that is developmentally appropriate, relevant to the world we live in, and based on best instructional practices and educational research.

John Thomas Dye has always considered character education as core to the student learning experience. Embraced by teachers, parents and students, the experience has centered on the development of interpersonal skills and cultivation of character development. The 5C’s: Caring, Common Sense, Consideration, Cooperation, and Courtesy, are integral to the overall student experience and character education component of our curriculum. As students progress through their learning journey at JTD, they become risk-takers, build confidence, leadership skills, and develop personal integrity.

As an elementary school, celebrating and preserving the magic of childhood is core to all that we do. Small milestones matter, lost teeth and birthdays, are treated as important life events. For over 90 years, students at JTD have experienced traditions that inspire reflection, connect students across generations, and build memories that last a lifetime.

The learning journey that our students progress through has been designed to provide an intentional, developmentally appropriate social emotional program, a culturally responsive curriculum, within a technology rich learning environment, all in addition to a robust academic program. We believe that the combination of these key components will lead to developing students who love learning and are equipped to be successful in the next stage of their learning journey.

Warm regards,
