Grade 2 Makes Waves with Ocean Conservation Field Trip

By Alexx Robles
Earlier this month, Grade 2 students eagerly embarked on their first field trip of the year to the Heal the Bay Aquarium in Santa Monica. This hands-on experience brought their classroom learning to life and marked an important milestone in their year-long ocean conservation service learning project. The trip also complemented their first social studies unit on communities, reinforcing the idea that strong communities are built by individuals who care for their environment and support one another.
During their visit, students met with marine scientists, explored interactive exhibits, and observed local sea life up close. They learned about a wide range of careers in marine science — from research and education to animal care — and discovered how these professionals play a vital role in protecting ocean ecosystems and promoting environmental stewardship. These real-world experiences helped students understand how scientific careers can make a meaningful difference in both the natural world and the community around them.

The day concluded with time on the Santa Monica beach, where students observed native wildlife and reflected on their own personal connections to the ocean.

This field trip was not only educational, but also deeply inspiring. Students returned to campus brimming with curiosity, fresh ideas, and a renewed sense of responsibility for caring for the marine environment. They are now more excited than ever to continue their ocean stewardship service learning project — and to find their own ways to protect and preserve marine life.
