Bringing Math to Life: Parents Peek Inside the JTD Math Experience

By Coral Aijian
John Dye Hall was buzzing with excitement as parents participated in purposeful learning around our math curriculum at our March Lower School Coffee. There was not an empty seat in the Hall, as parents came together to experience math education the way that their children do at JTD.

To understand the progression of learning and skill development that occurs throughout students’ time at JTD, parents heard from teachers at each grade level to get a roadmap of our math program and demystify the Singapore Math approach. Teachers traced concepts across the grades to model how our math curriculum is designed to foster procedural efficiency, while also promoting deep and flexible conceptual understanding.

Most exciting was the opportunity for parents to apply their knowledge with hands-on practice. Just as their children do each day in class, parents were invited to construct and analyze visuals to communicate their mathematical thinking. Parents worked diligently through sample problems at each grade level, using the same strategies their children use. Some took notes, while others worked together to discuss their strategies or checked in with teachers to clarify their approach. From using counting cubes and number bonds in Kindergarten and Grade 1 to creating bar models in Grades 2-6, parents were able to see and experience how each year’s learning builds on the next, both in concept and in strategy.

Parents left feeling more connected to their child’s mathematical journey at JTD–and perhaps with a more efficient strategy for dividing fractions. We are grateful to all the families who attended for modeling that learning is a lifelong process!
