JTD Family Program: Building Bonds That Last

By Sigita Newsom
Step onto campus during a Family Program gathering and you feel it immediately. A kindergartener spots an older buddy and lights up. Sixth graders guide conversations, include everyone, and make space. Faculty and staff are part of it too. What began as a simple idea has grown into a network of relationships that connects students across grades and brings people together in meaningful ways.
The Family Program is now a defining part of the student experience at JTD, fostering connection, belonging, and shared responsibility. Students are known across grade levels, and relationships extend beyond the classroom.

The program builds on the original Buddy Program, which paired Grade 1 and Grade 6 students around shared reading. While literacy was the focus, the real impact came from the relationships. Younger students found role models, and older students developed leadership rooted in care. Still, those connections were short-lived, resetting each year.

The Family Program was designed to create continuity. Students are paired across grades, Kindergarten with Grade 3, Grade 1 with Grade 4, and Grade 2 with Grade 5, with Grade 6 students serving as “Grand Buddies.” These pairs are part of 21 school “Families” that include students from every grade along with faculty and staff.

Students also have a voice in the process. Rising third and sixth graders complete questionnaires about shared interests and what matters most in a buddy, helping create thoughtful, personal pairings from the start.

Families gather regularly throughout the year, creating a rhythm of shared experiences. Whether exploring traditions like Sukkot or Diwali, participating in service learning, or simply spending time together, these moments are both structured and personal. Younger students observe and learn. Older students lead. Faculty and staff build connections beyond their usual roles.

One of the most anticipated moments comes each September during the buddy pairing ceremony. Kindergarteners scan the crowd, waiting. Older students whisper and guess. Teachers watch, knowing how much these first connections matter.

The impact is often seen in small, everyday moments, students walking hand in hand, conversations that pick up easily, and a sense of familiarity that grows over time.

Students carry these relationships with them long after they leave JTD. What stays with them is not just a memory, but a lasting sense of confidence, empathy, and belonging. At its core, the Family Program ensures every student feels seen, known, and part of something larger than themselves.
