Shining Light on Gratitude
Our third gathering as JTD families gave us an opportunity to learn about and celebrate Diwali. Grade 6 students took the reins and led a discussion about the significance of Diwali. They shared stories from Indian mythology, explaining the triumph of good over evil and the return of Lord Rama after defeating the evil king Ravana.
We learned that during Diwali, families light clay lamps called diyas as a symbol of prosperity, gratitude, and happiness. Armed with brightly colored Model Magic clay, gems, and LED candles, students, faculty, and staff created their own unique diyas. When the diyas were completed, we sat in a circle, looked into the flame, and said a silent wish we had for our community. We spent the rest of our time together sharing about things for which we were grateful.
One goal of each of our family gatherings is to foster a sense of belonging with all members of our community. Involving various members of our community in our campus experiences is a way to ensure everyone feels connected and valued. Our time together as JTD families reminds us we all have so much to learn from one another.
