Admissions Process

The John Thomas Dye School admits students of any race, color, religion, sexual orientation, or national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School.
JTD does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, or national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic or other school-administered programs.
Policy & Procedure
Applicants for admission are accepted one year prior to the student's enrollment. The application will be available online starting August 2021.
To begin the process, we ask that you please fill out an inquiry form. Once we receive an inquiry, we will send instructions on how to access the application. You may also contact our admissions office by phone or email for information.

For Kindergarten, girls must be five years old by September 1, 2021. Boys must be five years old by June 1, 2021.

Applications for Kindergarten admission are considered on a first-come basis beginning at the end of September. Please note that we limit the number of Kindergarten applications we process to 70 boys and 70 girls, and often we reach that number in the first few days. We do keep an active waitlist and encourage families to contact the admissions office if applying after September.

Applications for transfer students in Grades 1 through 6 are accepted by the second Friday in January. Availability at each grade level is limited depending on the number of projected openings we will have in any given year.

Siblings of present students, employees’ children, and children of legacy families who have sustained a positive relationship with our school since graduating will be given preference once they have met the admissions requirements. In addition, the school's policy states that it may accept up to 40% unaffiliated families in Kindergarten.

  • Fees

    The application fee is $150 but waived for those asking for tuition assistance. If requiring financial assistance, please contact the Admissions Office to receive the waiver code.
  • Birth Certificate

    A copy of your child's birth certificate/passport is required for all applicants, no matter the grade level. You may scan or upload a copy of the birth certificate/passport along with your application.
  • Photos

    In order to help us remember each candidate, two photos are required as part of your child's application. Please upload a small picture of the candidate and a simple family photo as per the application instructions.
  • Release of Information Form

    The Release of Information form is to be given to the Director/Registrar of your child's present school and returned along with any academic records. Most preschools will not have student records, but grades First through Sixth applicants have a permanent record at their present school. 

    All information should be returned to us via email to admissions@jtdschool.org no later than January 15, 2021.
  • Teacher Recommendation

    The Teacher Recommendations are specific to grade level. Please give the forms to the appropriate teacher/school. The Teacher Recommendation form is to be completed by your child's current teacher after the first grading period or parent conference. (If your child has not had a formalized school experience due to Covid-19, please contact the Admissions Office to make other arrangements.)     All information should be returned to us via email to admissions@jtdschool.org no later than January 15, 2021.
  • Personal Recommendation

    A personal letter is required for Grades One through Six only. Personal recommendations are not required for Kindergarten. Please have recommendations written by someone who knows your child well. All recommendations should be sent via email to jhirsch@jtdschool.org and received by January 15, 2021 for the 2021-2022 school year. Multiple recommendation letters are discouraged.
  • Financial Assistance

    The cost of an independent school should not prohibit a qualified student from obtaining a strong elementary education. If you are interested in applying for financial assistance, whether you require a large amount or a small amount, please check the appropriate box on the application. The application fee is waived if you are applying for assistance. You may contact the Admissions Office to get the waiver code. Please refer to the page on Financial Assistance under Admissions for more specific information.
  • Acceptances

    After carefully reviewing each applicant's file, the Admissions committee will meet in March 2021, to make final decisions for the 2021-2022 school year. Notifications stating acceptance, waitlist, or non-acceptance will be sent through your Admissions Progress page under Decision to each family on March 12, 2021 with contracts due back on March 22, 2021.

Visiting JTD

  • Parking on Campus

    There is a parking structure on the west side of the campus. Please check in with our security and park on the upper level. Security will supply you with a required visitor pass.
  • Tours

    (Optional) Unfortunately, as long as our school must remain closed due to the Los Angeles Health Dept. regulations, we will have to postpone our on campus tours.

    Virtual campus tours for prospective applicants' parents are given in May and September. Please fill out an inquiry form and then email Kim Bublitz at kbublitz@jtdschool.org to schedule a virtual tour.
  • Interviews

    Interviews are scheduled from October through February. For First through Sixth grade parent/candidate interviews, Kim Bublitz will reach out to you to arrange a time once we've confirmed our teacher schedules due to the changes in the health department requirements. We appreciate your patience and look forward to meeting your family.

    Kindergarten parent interviews take approximately one hour. We will not meet the Kindergarten applicant at this time.
  • Class Observations

    (Optional) In previous years we have been able to schedule observations of our classrooms for prospective parents. This year we are subject to the safety requirements of the Los Angeles Department of Health. We will post the availability of these visits as soon as we have their guidance.

  • Open Houses

    (Optional)  We are planning to host Kindergarten Virtual Open Houses in November. Grades One through Six Open House will be in January.
  • Evaluations

    Please know that our process and dates might change due to restrictions from the Los Angeles County Health Department's Covid-19 virus information. 

    Kindergarten admission to The John Thomas Dye School is based on an assessment of the child's developmental readiness. First through Sixth grade admission is based on a student's academic ability, previous school record, and performance on school testing.

    School-developed evaluations are used for Kindergarten through Third Grade.  Fourth, Fifth and Sixth grade applicants may submit results of ISEE standardized testing or previous school standardized testing. If your child wants to take the ISEE, please use the John Thomas Dye School's code of 054003. Tests are available to be taken remotely. We will also be giving an assessment to Fourth through Sixth grade candidates through NWEA Map on February 20, from 8:30 am to 11:45 am. Please contact the admissions office for more information.

    Screenings for Kindergarten applicants will be offered on Saturday, December 12, 2020, January 9, 2021 and February 6, 2021. Once in the applicant pool, please check with other schools to see when they need to see your child, then, call us to arrange the time and date you would prefer. 

    Siblings of present students and faculty children will be evaluated on November 7, 2020.
