Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Brittany Adams

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 through October 15, we wanted to take a moment to shine a spotlight on some of our JTD employees–sharing a little about them and what this month means to them!
We’re kicking things off by spotlighting Brittany Adams, our School Psychologist and Lower School Student Success Team Coordinator. Brittany graciously answered five questions about her career, life, and heritage. Here's a little more about Brittany in her own words:

What is your Hispanic background?
I am Latina-African American. My maternal family is from El Salvador.

What do you most enjoy about your job?
I enjoy making connections with students. It is important to me that all children are seen for who they are and that their diversity is embraced. As a child, I longed to be accepted and hope to give the same to each child.

How do you enjoy spending your free time?
My interests include mental health, spirituality, and physical health. My hobbies usually bring all these aspects together. Whether it's yoga, dancing, or hiking, I try my best to get moving and practice self-care.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
When President Barack Obama was in office, I got the rare privilege of getting to spend two weeks in Cuba. It was a special experience to get a chance to see another culture that we don't typically have access to. This experience highlighted the universal humanity that exists across borders.

How has your background shaped you or had an influence on you personally or professionally?
Growing up it was important to understand my family's history and where we came from. My maternal grandparents made the brave decision to come to America and seek more opportunities for their children. When they came to this country they brought over five children and had two more once they were here. My grandfather and grandmother, Orlando and Paula Rivas, instilled a legacy of hard work, resilience, love, and acceptance in our family. I bring these values with me every day that I come to work and interact with students and families.

Thank you Ms. Adams for sharing a little about yourself! Look for more Hispanic Heritage Month Employee Spotlights in the weeks ahead!
