Grade 2 Learns about their Community

By Kate Merritt
Over the past few weeks our Grade 2 students have been learning about their community in a social studies unit on "Community Needs and Wants."
Students started out their study by learning about basic economic concepts: supply and demand, scarcity, and wants versus needs. They then began discussing community helpers here at JTD, and each student had a chance to interview someone who works here on campus to learn about their work and how they make a difference in the JTD community. Students visited with members of our security team, business office, support staff, and even Head of School Ms. Helm, asking questions like "What tools do you need to do your job?" and "Who do you depend on to do your job?" Our second graders quickly realized that it takes many people behind the scenes to keep our School running!

Our Grade 2 teachers then guided our students to look at our larger community, and parents were invited to come to campus to share about their jobs in JTD's annual Grade 2 Career Day! Parents set up in John Dye Hall as our second graders went from table to table to learn about working in construction and engineering, medicine, and media production, and more!

A big thank you to all those who took the time to share a little about their careers with our second graders!

Start a discussion!
