Celebrating Día de los Muertos
If you were to step foot into John Dye Hall on November 1, you would see a festive display of photos, candles, colorful flags, and decorated sugar skulls. Over the past few weeks, JTD students have been preparing an ofrenda for Día de los Muertos!
In their families, Grade 6 students shared the importance of Día de los Muertos in Mexican and Latin American culture and then led a discussion about the ways we celebrate the loved ones in our own families who have passed away. We then worked together to make orange tissue paper marigolds (it's believed that the the scent of these bright orange blooms help attract souls to the altar) and decorated papel picado (the perforations in these paper flags allow a way for souls to travel through and visit and also represent the fragility of life), which we used to decorate John Dye Hall.
Families were then invited to send in photographs of beloved family members or pets who have passed on, or objects that remind them of those loved ones. Calavera de azúcar, or sugar skulls, which symbolize the sweetness of life and represent the souls who have passed and are receiving offerings at the alter, were placed alongside the offerings, photos, and mementos.
Once this ofrenda was completed, students visited as a class to learn about this important tradition, honor our loved ones, and celebrate this day as a community!
