JTD Students' Commitment to Service

By Sigita Newsom
A core tenet at JTD is our students' commitment to service in our community. Service learning is the invisible thread that links our classroom curriculum and community events to the world around us, whether locally or globally. While all our students participate in service learning projects in the classroom, some students participate in Service Learning Clubs. These clubs present an opportunity to link students' interests in social issues with action.
The Grade 3 Service Learning Club is intended to provide the oldest students of the Lower School with an opportunity to learn the process of service learning as they engage in thoughtful activities that foster their critical thinking, problem solving, and team building skills. The Upper School Service Learning Club is a place where students can share their personal passions and act upon them. During this unique year, our Service Learning Clubs continued to be active both on Zoom and on campus!

While our Grade 3 students were engaging in thoughtful conversations such as, “What items do we need in life, versus what do we simply want?”, our Upper School students were forming passion project groups. This year’s passion project themes were: COVID-19 Relief, Female Empowerment, and Food Scarcity. Throughout the year students met to discuss these issues, hosted a Mask Chain Kit sale with proceeds going to the World Health Organization, and partnered with alumna Ava Croxall '16 to run a drive for her COVID-19 Relief Care program.

To showcase the meaningful work that our clubs did over the year, the Service Learning Clubs held Service Learning Week! Throughout the week, students presented videos and announcements and hosted community activities. As a final community service project, students in Grades K-6 were invited to create colorful cards for children at Children’s Hospital LA. Our Service Learning Week culminated with "5C’s Friday" - a day of kindness! The campus was buzzing with consideration!

Thank you to our Service Learning Clubs for all you did for our community this year!
