Career Day 2021 is a Huge Success

By Kate Merritt
On Thursday, March 25, JTD Grade 6 students took a day away from their regular class schedule to participate in Career Day.

Students started their day with a talk with Jesse Billauer, who spoke to our sixth graders over Zoom about his journey from top junior surfer to quadriplegic. With the help of his family, friends, and his surfing community, Jesse was able to get back in the water and win the World Adaptive Surfing Championship. Jesse then founded Life Rolls On, a non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for people living with various disabilities. His resilience, determination, and optimism were truly inspirational. He shared with our students that their power is in their perspective, not in their circumstances.
Students spent the days leading up to Career Day researching possible careers: the education needed for those careers, the possible salaries, the resources needed, etc. Following their time with Mr. Billauer, students met in small groups with professionals in their desired fields. Over twenty professionals Zoomed in, speaking with our students on everything from veterinary surgery to video game design.

In most school years, JTD students meet with professionals in the Los Angeles area in person, but the pandemic shift to Zoom allowed students to meet with people both near and far with professionals Zooming in from all over the world!

A big thank you to all our guest professionals and the many room parents and teachers who made Career Day 2021 a huge success!
